The Department of English Language and Literature invites applications for a full-time fixed-term (maternity cover) Teaching Fellowship in English Literature. The post will run from 25 September 2017 until 23 March 2018. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at least one of the following undergraduate courses:

The Romantics Period (1789-1832)
American Literature in English to 1900.
The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to one or more of the following first-year courses: Narrative Texts, Criticism & Theory, Intellectual and Cultural Sources. S/he will, in addition, be required to give tutorials to undergraduate students; to undertake the normal duties of teaching administration; and to attend departmental meetings. The person appointed may be asked to do some interviewing of UCAS applicants and marking of interview candidates’ written work.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in English, either gained or submitted by the start of the appointment, and must be able to demonstrate scholarship in literature of the Romantic period or pre-twentieth-century American literature in English, as well as the ability to teach successfully at higher education level.

Junior Professorship for the History of North America in its Transcultural Context (Salary Scale W1 with the possibility of Tenure Track W2)

Applicants should be familiar with the variety of subject areas and methodology within the field of North American History in its transcultural context particularly in the area of Modern History in both research and teaching. The successful post holder should place a focus on the transcultural entanglements of the North American Continent both within its borders and without for the time period from the 16th to the beginning of the 21st century. Particular emphasis should be put on processes and phenomena of North American cultural, migration and political history, as well as on the transatlantic connections and the global importance of North America.

Candidates should be both willing and able to work within an international and interdisciplinary context, as well as to work with colleagues to develop new perspectives and projects for larger research groups and to bring in the necessary third party funding. This includes cooperation with the History Institute’s focus on “Security and the Public Sphere” as well as with other professors specialised in American Studies within the framework of the “Universitätsallianz Ruhr”.

Applicants should be active in the national and international research communities. A high commitment to teaching is essential, as is the willingness to participate in academic self-governance.

Requirements for the position include an excellent PhD/Dissertation and evidence of special aptitude for academic teaching as well as the willingness to participate in the self-governing bodies of the RUB. In addition, applicants are required to be enthusiastic about teaching, to contribute to the relevant research projects and to work within an interdisciplinary and international context. A further requirement is the willingness and ability to acquire third party funding and to supervise PhD candidates.

The University of Sussex and the British Library intend to make a PhD studentship appointment under the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership scheme (CDP) from autumn 2017.

This project will draw on the British Library’s extensive holdings of American political pamphlets to study and contextualise the writing, printing, distribution and dissemination of political pamphlets produced in the years preceding and during the Second World War. The Library’s collection of American pamphlets from the interwar period contains publications by different anti-fascist, anti-capitalist and pacifist societies. The researcher will also benefit from access to the extensive collection of US political pamphlets at the Marx Memorial Library, a partner of the project.

Through co-supervision the doctoral researcher will be guided towards the production of a multi-layered digital map of the pamphlets held in the collections, which would then be used to reanalyse the landscape of transatlantic radicalism during the period. In this way, the project will chart the origins, production, distribution and reception of the pamphlets. The resulting digital resource will document, and present in an accessible way, the British library’s collection of pamphlets in this area.

Studentships are awarded for 3 years (or part-time equivalent) initially. The AHRC stipend for 2017/18 is £14,553 (full-time, pro rata for part-time). The British Library will provide research-related expenses of up to £1,000 p.a. (against receipts, and in addition to the normal research expenses element of an AHRC studentship), including, but not limited to, travel to other libraries that hold relevant archival material and to project-related conferences.

Eligible candidates will have very strong academic records; they will normally have a relevant Masters’ degree or equivalent post-graduate qualification. Those with backgrounds in American Studies, English literature, History (and especially book history and print culture) will be especially well-prepared.
