The Ruhr-Universität Bochum – Faculty of History – invites applications for the following position to start on 1 October 2017:
Junior Professorship for the History of North America in its Transcultural Context (Salary Scale W1 with the possibility of Tenure Track W2)
Applicants should be familiar with the variety of subject areas and methodology within the field of North American History in its transcultural context particularly in the area of Modern History in both research and teaching. The successful post holder should place a focus on the transcultural entanglements of the North American Continent both within its borders and without for the time period from the 16th to the beginning of the 21st century. Particular emphasis should be put on processes and phenomena of North American cultural, migration and political history, as well as on the transatlantic connections and the global importance of North America.
Candidates should be both willing and able to work within an international and interdisciplinary context, as well as to work with colleagues to develop new perspectives and projects for larger research groups and to bring in the necessary third party funding. This includes cooperation with the History Institute’s focus on “Security and the Public Sphere” as well as with other professors specialised in American Studies within the framework of the “Universitätsallianz Ruhr”.
Applicants should be active in the national and international research communities. A high commitment to teaching is essential, as is the willingness to participate in academic self-governance.
Requirements for the position include an excellent PhD/Dissertation and evidence of special aptitude for academic teaching as well as the willingness to participate in the self-governing bodies of the RUB. In addition, applicants are required to be enthusiastic about teaching, to contribute to the relevant research projects and to work within an interdisciplinary and international context. A further requirement is the willingness and ability to acquire third party funding and to supervise PhD candidates.
