Job Purpose

To provide academic leadership by conducting internationally-leading research, delivering research-led education, and contributing to School administration as required by the Head of School. The post-holder will lead a research agenda in English Literature, with the specific remit of stimulating collaborative research and external grant applications involving colleagues both within and outside the School.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Lead and engage in research and publication that enhances the quality of the School’s international research profile, including conducting personal research of the highest quality and maintaining a consistently high level output of publications and presentations of world-class quality.
2. Sustain internationally leading high quality research activity, seeking and securing funding for a portfolio of research projects through grant applications to external funding bodies, e.g. Research Councils.
3. Encourage research students of high calibre to undertake doctoral research and supervise them to completion.
4. Supervise research projects undertaken by research staff and postgraduate students and ensure the effective development of the staff and students.
5. Deliver a range of teaching and assessment activity at postgraduate level within the School and subject area.
6. Take a leading role in the design and delivery of postgraduate programmes and courses, including opportunities leading from new research.
7. Develop links with national and international organisations with a view to enhancing research and teaching in the School and in the subject area.
8. Act in a senior role within the School and/or subject area in administrative and other activities as directed by the Head of School.
9. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan – Inspiring People – Changing the World.

The University of Birmingham wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Early Modern Literature with effect from 1st September 2017. Visiting Research Fellowships (VRF) at the Institute of English Studies, School of Advanced Study, University of London are offered for a period of six to twelve months. We welcome interest from scholars in English Studies based in the UK or overseas, including non-affiliated researchers. Visiting Research Fellows will be entitled to use of shared office space in the Institute in Bloomsbury, access to Senate House Library, an email account, free attendance at Institute events such as conferences, seminars and workshops (summer school places at reduced cost), access to other events in the School of Advanced Study and to a fund for travel/research expenses (currently up to £200 pa, subject to affordability and demand). VRFs are expected to contribute to the Institute’s activities, through participation in its events, projects and the general intellectual and research environment.

Postdoctoral Visiting Research Fellowships (PVRF) are reserved for non-affiliated early-stage researchers within five years of the award of their doctorate. They can be held for a period up to a year and are normally non-renewable. The Institute will provide the same resources as those listed above for VRFs. PVRFs are intended to provide early stage researchers with a base from which to complete research, and apply for grants and academic posts, while participating in activities within the Institute. Appointees will be welcome, but not required, to initiate activities such as seminars, workshops or conferences of their own.

Applications are invited from 1 February – 1 March. Candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application soon after 15 March. There is no restriction as to the period or subject matter, and all topics within the field of English Studies will be considered. It may be an advantage to demonstrate a link to the Institute’s core research interests. All applicants should demonstrate a significant record of research achievement and contribution to the discipline as appropriate to career stage, circumstances and the category of Fellowship for which they are applying. Fellows are required to produce a short annual report of their activities.
