IAAS Postgraduate and Early-Career Research, Travel, and Conference Bursaries

Due to Covid-19, travel-related bursaries have been temporarily suspended for health and safety reasons. IAAS will continue to offer Early-Career research support through mentoring programs, online programming, and essay prizes.

Since 2012, in response to suggestions from our then-Treasurer Tony Emmerson, the IAAS has introduced a number of awards and bursaries, aimed at postgraduate and early-career scholars, to facilitate travel to conferences, or for research purposes. Applications are invited from persons normally resident in Ireland or Northern Ireland. All applicants MUST be IAAS members.

The Prizes Sub-Committee will judge the application based on

  • the quality of the application;
  • the financial need in which the applicant finds him/herself;
  • the importance of the proposed trip or conference to the applicant’s research/career; and
  • the relevance of the proposed research/ conference to the IAAS’s interests and concerns.

Postgraduate applicants must be currently enrolled on a postgraduate degree programme at universities and institutions of higher education in Ireland or Northern Ireland.

Early-career/ postdoctoral applicants must apply within seven years of being awarded a PhD (from the date of graduation). Priority will be given to the following:

  • Applicants who do not hold an academic position, or those who are in part-time, short-term, or non-tenured academic employment.

We will also consider applications from:

  • Applicants in full-time and/or permanent employment who can demonstrate an absence or paucity of other forms of funding available to them.
  • Applicants who can demonstrate that securing external funding is essential to the further progression of their academic career.

Where relevant, IAAS particularly welcomes applications from scholars needing to visit the USA, although all applications relating to American Studies research will be considered.

Upon completion of their research and/or travel, successful recipients will submit a brief report detailing their use of the bursary, for publication on the IAAS website. This may include (as appropriate) the length and location of their stay, their overall experience, their conference presentation, which resources they accessed, and the outcome of their research.
